Bankajyo
Late Edo 〜 Meiji (Mid 19th Century)
Artist: Akio Yamamoto

“Bankajyo” is a collection of various beautiful sketched flowers. Akio Yamamoto (1827-1903), the sixth son of Boyo Yamamoto, a famous Kyoto scholar of natural history, sketched plants around the late Edo era to Meiji era. According to the lunar calendar, the year is divided into 24 sections of seasons. Akio Yamamoto organized his drawings by this division. The cover page and dust jacket was obviously handmade by Tadaka Ichijo, (the father of Empress Dowager Shoken) due to it being marked in vermillion with a writing brush. Tadaka was one of Boyo's followers.
It was necessary to make exact sketches for botanical research, so Boyo had Akio study under Kyoto’s famous contributors to Japanese art, Chikuzan Gamo and Tetsuzan Mori, from the age of 15. Akio made various energetic sketches of animals, plants and minerals and it is said that he made thousands in his own style.
Akio had deep knowledge as a scholar of natural history as well as definite skill as an artist. This “Bankajyo” made by Akio’s hand intoxicates our minds with the beauty of nature’s seasons.
